"Statement Sleeves"

Classwork 2024

Inspired by the "Statement Sleeves" Exhibit at the Museum at FIT, I created two designs incorporating the same style of sleeves in two different time periods: 1890s, and 1980s

Design Concept:

The costume design concept takes inspiration from old soundstage

technicolor musicals,

and creates the highly curated “perfect” world of Wonka’s factory. Taking inspiration from the

decades making up the “golden age of Hollywood” (1927-1969), each character wears

silhouettes and styles from specific moments within this time period to represent their

specific personalities and situations. Coming from the idea that this is a spectacle retelling by

Wonka, each character has their own unique color scheme and style to coincide with their

ultimate failure within Wonka’s test. The overall color palette is a mix of jewel tones and

muted neutrals to represent the contrast between Wonka’s world and Charlie’s. Every look

has some sort of shine or sparkle to give that showy, ethereal look.

“A Rainbow of Confusion”

The Costume Design is inspired by the playful and bizarre nature of puppet and marionette shows, and plays on the

absurdity of the scenarios the characters get themselves into. Character is explored through the exaggeration of the

times already extreme proportions and silhouettes. Each upper class character is assigned a jewel-tone color to fit their

personality and status, and their respective servants wear a muted version of this color to show their association. To

further push this class distinction, the upper class use only gold for their metals, while the working class use a steel

gray. To further distinguish characters, and to play off the the overall theme of romance and courting, each character is

assigned a flower with a relevant meaning, which is displayed somewhere on their costume.

The Costume design is inspired by the dark and mysterious nature of this play. It is all a memory of Nick's and as such there is a haze over everything. As such, each characters design is inspired by how Nick views that character throughout the story. Jordan starts of in colors that live in Daisy's palette, but begins to wear darker colors as Nick sees her dark side. She has hints of masculine elements in her clothing throughout the play, in contrast to Daisy's extreme femininity.
